Spotlight Post 3: the Blog

Fractal Tesseract

The main focus of this website is stories. Right now they’re my stories—twenty-seven published, so far, two in the drawer (figuring what to do with them), nine doing the rounds, several being written, one of which is a 50,000+ words novella and many more in the planning, amongst which three novels—but who knows, in the future I might add stories from other writers. Still figuring that out.

But there’s more to it than just stories. Stories mature in the brain of the writer, and they need to be fed so that they can grow, develop and become—hopefully—unique and compelling. In my case I probably tend to eat up more than I can chew—figuratively speaking—as I do have an insatiable curiosity.

So while I do read fiction—mostly science fiction, but also other genres including literature—I probably spend more time reading about the latest developments in science and technology. On top of that, I try to maintain a child-like sense of wonder at the most common things like a beautiful sunset (see image below), a magnificent landscape, a strange object and more. Until six years ago I never took pictures. With the advent of smartphones, whose cameras keep improving, I’ve been taken more and more pictures, many of them featured on this website.

In any case, in the Blog I try to throw some light into my writing process: not just the writing and the writing business itself, but also in the many things that fire the writing engine. For ease of use I’ve cut the Blog in two:

  • On Writing;
  • Musings on the Impossible;

Where the first one will be the somewhat drier and down-to-earth one about story and reprint sales, trends in SF, short fiction and the writing business. The second one will be much more freewheeling as it tries to capture how my spirit sometimes roams through various topics, subjects and thoughtscapes. I shortly though about a series of post about how music influences my writing, but decided against it as I explain that for each separate story in the story comments.

Nevertheless, even that may change. I’ve set up this website not just to get all my stories in one place, but also to re-focus my writing efforts while I slowly re-engage with the world at large. Like my writing, this website will be an ongoing work in progress.
